Clinic Overview
We’ll delve into the world of chart-based navigation, with a particular focus on visual navigation — using the features we see around us, and on our charts, to guide and inform our paddling excursions.
Over the course of this clinic, you will learn:
- how to read and understand the symbols on your chart – in theory and in real life;
- how to translate what you see on your chart to what you see around you when you’re paddling – and vice versa;
- how to accurately and efficiently identify and track your position on a chart, using visual landmarks around you;
- how to use ranges, lines of position, backstops and more to keep yourself on course;
- how to estimate and track travel time, speed and distance on a chart and in real time;
- how to lead a section of a day trip using your chart to guide and inform you;
- and more!
Note: This course is not focussed on compass-based navigation, although the curriculum may include some compass-based exercises. Our goal is to solidify your visual navigation skills, which are always your first line of navigational knowledge on the water!
